Doulas: How to Build Your Online Audience

The traditional doula business model focuses primarily on serving clients in person. And while that is important, growing your online audience will help your business grow.

Identify Your Ideal Client

The first step to building your online audience is to identify your ideal client. Not every pregnant person will be your ideal client, and that’s okay.

As you become more clear with who your ideal client is, your messaging also becomes more clear. As your message comes through in your online spaces, your ideal client will literally think, “that’s my person!”

It’s a good idea to write down a description of who that person is. Here are some questions to help you identify your ideal client:

  • Who is she?

  • What does she do?

  • What does her day look like?

  • What type of birth does she want?

  • What are her goals?

  • Where does she hang out online?

  • What are her concerns, fears and struggles?

Another idea is to write a letter to your ideal client. What does she need to hear?

When you sit down to write content, think about your ideal client and write for her.

Where do Your Ideal Clients Hang Out Online?

Make a list of all of the platforms that your ideal client uses (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.). Then, decide which platform you’ll meet her at.

Your Website

Think about your website like internet real estate. It’s your online home.

Social media platforms can come and go… and you never have control over them.

No matter what might happen tomorrow with social media, you can always meet your clients on your website.

Create Content

Go back to your ideal clients’ struggles. Where can you offer solutions to their concerns? Where can you show up in her life with answers and support.

There is no one-size-fits-all for this. Choose the platforms that feel easiest for you, right now. Examples include: blog posts, instagram posts, facebook, videos, etc. Bonus points for repurposing content (hint: this blog post was originally a live training in the Doulas Going Digital facebook group).

Begin to Grow Your E-Mail List

By far, the easiest (& funnest) way to grow your email list is with a freebie opt-in. Creating a freebie takes additional upfront work, but it’s something that continues to support your business, and mission, forever.
